How To Protect Yourself From Germs at the Grocery Store

We need to be doing more than wiping down the cart handle. So here are 10 tips created by Food Network to try and stay protected from germs while at the grocery store.

  1. Wipe down your shopping cart.
    • Most germs are transmitted by human hands and the first thing you will touch is the shopping cart.
  2. If non-disposable, clean your shopping bags when you get home.
    • Your resusable bags have most likely touched many things in the store. Remember to wash then when you’re done using them.
  3. Examine your produce.
    • Buy fresh produce that does not have any cracks, holes, or openings.
  4. Avoid buying products that have been opened or teared.
    • Examine your packaged foods for anything like leaking canned goods, swollen tops, tears, or damp areas.
  5. Skip free samples.
    • These food have been previously handled which means a greater opportunity for germs to be.
  6. Separate ready-to-eat and raw foods.
    • The germs from raw meat and fish can easily be cross contaminated from the meat juice. Make sure to keep your raw meats separate so your produce and packeged items do not get contaminated.
  7. Watch those self checkout.
    • Everyone’s hands touch the self checkout screen. Use a sanitizing wipe or hand sanitizer to wipe down the area.
  8. Keep an eye out on the credit card machines too.
    • Don‘t forget to wipe down the credit card machine too!
  9. Bring hand sanitizer.
    • Just in case the store does not have sanitizing wipes there.
  10. Wash your hands when you get home.
    • The first thing you should do when you get home is wash your hands for at least 20 seconds. Remember to scrub in between your fingers, nails, finger tips, palms, and the back of your hands.
